On Sunday, September 29, 2024, in the chapel of the Missionaries of Bethléem in Immensee, for the first time in 18 years, new promises were made by Joël Mambe, the very first non-Swiss member of the SMB.
Born in 1987 in Mushie, Democratic Republic of Congo, Joël comes from a modest family. After completing his secondary education, he pursued his formation toward the priesthood. Ordained as a priest in 2015, he then specialized in biblical exegesis, first in Paris and then at the University of Fribourg starting in 2021. It was during this time that he came into contact with the SMB, residing within the Torry community (FR).
In the summer of 2022, Joël expressed his desire to join the SMB. His request coincided with that of Bishop Rudolf Nyandoro of Gweru in Zimbabwe, who called for the revival of the SMB’s presence in his diocese. In response, the 2023 General Chapter agreed to these requests, thus opening the way for the recruitment of non-Swiss candidates, expanding the missionary reach of the SMB.
In 2023, Joël began his novitiate. The Torry house became a training center for novices, also welcoming other candidates. Meanwhile, in April 2024, the first SMB novitiate in Africa opened in Driefontein, welcoming young men from Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Congo.
Elected in 2023 as Superior General and inspired by the new strategy expressed by the General Chapter, Ludovic Nobel stated in his first interview:
«I do not know God’s plans or what the future holds, but I do not see my mission as one to close the community. That would not be a task that would excite me. My wish is rather for the SMB to endure and welcome new members.»
Joël embodies this renewal. He made his temporary promises for a period of two years, thus becoming a full member of the SMB. Joël shares with us:
«After a year, accompanied by Father Joseph, we studied the fundamental texts, the constitutions, and the history of the SMB. This period was enriching, full of exchanges about the foundations of the SMB and how to continue its mission in the future. What deeply touched me was the concept of kenosis — this voluntary self-emptying in the image of Christ. We are called to join others in their poverty to bring them hope.»
Thus, the SMB strengthens its determination today to explore new paths for the mission. As Fr. Nobel said in his homily:
«Although the SMB has its roots in Switzerland, its charism belongs to the whole Church. Joël and the other young people must be welcomed with kindness.»
Let us wish Joël, as well as all future members of the SMB, the strength and courage to spread the spirit of Bethléem.
