Gospel of the Day | The Baptism of Christ reveals the Father’s love for His Son and the deep human desire to be loved and called by name. How does this event illuminate our own baptism and our identity as children of God?
A Universal Need for Love and Recognition
The account of Christ’s Baptism reveals a fundamental human longing: to be recognized, welcomed, and loved. During this unique moment, the heavens open, and the Father’s voice proclaims:
“You are my beloved Son; with you, I am well pleased” (Lk 3:22).
This public declaration of love unveils Jesus’s unique identity as the Son of God upon whom the Holy Spirit rests.
This feast extends the light of Christmas, reminding us that, although thirty years have passed since the events in Bethlehem, this moment is part of the revelation of the Messiah whom the shepherds and the star pointed to. It also marks the beginning of Jesus’s public ministry, where He will manifest God’s love for humanity.
A Mission of Love for Humanity
The Baptism of Jesus inaugurates His ministry.
Close to the poor, the sick, and the brokenhearted, Jesus reveals the unconditional love of the Father for all, especially the most vulnerable. Through His ultimate sacrifice, Jesus demonstrates that this love knows no bounds. This baptism, where the Holy Spirit descends upon Him, is a visible testament to the intimate bond between the Father and the Son and an invitation to recognize Jesus as Lord.
Ce baptême, où l’Esprit descend sur Jésus, est un témoignage visible du lien étroit entre le Père et le Fils et une invitation à reconnaître Jésus comme Seigneur.
A Reminder of Our Own Baptism
The Feast of the Baptism of Christ also reminds us of our own baptism.
Though we may not have witnessed the heavens opening or heard a heavenly voice, we received the same Spirit.
Through baptism, we became beloved sons and daughters of God. This sacrament fulfills our deep yearning to be called by name and loved for who we are. It invites us to live fully our Christian identity in the light of divine love.
A Prayer for Our Baptismal Identity
Lord, we thank You for the gift of baptism, through which You call us Your beloved children. Help us to walk daily in the light of Your love, to follow the example of Your Son, and to bear witness to Your grace in the world.
Amen.

Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke
At that time,
the people were filled with expectation,
and all were asking in their hearts
whether John might be the Christ.
John answered them all, saying:
“I am baptizing you with water,
but one mightier than I is coming.
I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals.
He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
After all the people had been baptized,
and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying,
heaven was opened,
and the Holy Spirit descended upon him
in bodily form like a dove.
And a voice came from heaven:
“You are my beloved Son;
with you, I am well pleased.”
